Badger Surveys

Badgers (Meles meles) are protected under their own law; Protection of Badgers Act 1992, as well as being protected by Schedule 6 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). They are now relatively common and widespread across the UK, and it is not unusual to find them in both rural and urban environments. The first stage of a Badger survey is a site walkover, which is normally carried out as part of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal. If evidence of Badger activity is found then further surveys may be required to ascertain the numbers of animals present.

Signs of Badger activity on a site can include:

  • Setts
  • Mammal trails
  • Latrines (Badger toilet!)
  • Snuffle holes (from foraging)
  • Footprints
  • Hairs caught on a fence

If Badgers are present then mitigation such as avoiding the sett, buffer strips and corridors can be provided, but occasionally a Badger licence is required to move the sett to a new location.
