Reptile Surveys

Six species of reptile are protected in the UK. Reptile surveys can be carried out between March and September if a site is considered potentially suitable for reptile species. The surveys involve laying out a number of refugia such as carpet tiles, squares of tarred felt or corrugated tin. Reptiles will lie beneath these to warm up, and can be seen when they are lifted. A number of visits to the site to check all of the refugia will reveal the presence or absence of reptiles on the site. Visual searches can also be used in some cases.
