Otter and Water Vole Surveys

When a site contains or is within close proximity to a watercourse then Otter (Lutra lutra) and Water Vole (Arvicola amphibius) should be taken into account. Often searching for these species will be carried out as part of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, and evidence of their presence includes:

  • Footprints
  • Spraints (faeces)
  • Holts/burrows
  • Feeding stations

Allowing buffer strips along the watercourse is a cost-effective and simple way to protect these species if they are found to be present.
