Bird Surveys

All wild birds, nests and eggs are protected under The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). In most cases if a breeding bird is present then works are timed to outside the breeding season, and an alternative nest site may be provided. However, if a site is considered to be potentially important for breeding birds then a survey may be required. This is normally established after conducting a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal. A breeding bird survey is carried out between March and June, and involves walking over the site to map territories of bird species and identify their conservation value.

Specific surveys for owls, in particular Barn Owls (Tyto alba) can also be carried out, often as part of a bat survey.
